I have hsv 2, sacral herpes, with outbreaks maybe 3 times a year.My gyn said since the virus was in the ganglia of the sacral region, I was only contagious if I had an outbreak. Then later she said I could shed a small amount of virus vaginally. So what are my options with a negative partner? Should I take valtrex? What about oral sex?Would my partner be in danger of contacting hsv 2 orally.? How could I proceed while offering maximum protection to my partner?

  • My gyn said since the virus was in the nerves of the sacral area, I was not contagious unless I had an outbreak. Then she said later, even without an outbreak, I could still shed a small amount of virus vaginally. How can I give my negative partner maximum protection. Should I take valtrex? Is oral sex dangerous? How easy would it be for him to contract it from me? I was married for 40 years. This is the first time I will have a new partner. I have probably had the virus close to 30 years.

For the best protection, you'll want to take a little valtrex daily (500mg) and use a condom. That should lower the chance of him getting it from you to under 2% a year with regular intercourse. Men are also twice less likely to get the virus from a woman than the other way around. It's true that you can still transmit the virus when you don't have sores but the chance of that is very small. I would recommend your partner get tested as many people cary the virus but they don't have symptoms (80%).

I have that, too! I take 200 mgs of acyclovir daily so the virus never pops up. I get sick all over if I get a break out! I have scars all over my scaral area from not knowing what to do earlier. Just take the meds and suppress it.
